ABOUT

Rebecca Illing is a London-based death doula, working with individuals, families and communities around death, grief and mortality.

Grounded in lived experience, Rebecca’s approach is direct, compassionate and practical. Her work creates space for conversations around death and dying that are often avoided until crisis forces them into view.

Prior to working as a death doula, Rebecca worked in theatre and the performing arts, where she found herself repeatedly drawn to themes of mortality, grief, impermanence, and care.

When her mother became ill, caring for her felt intuitive. Around the same time, Rebecca was sent an article about death doulas, and everything she read resonated immediately. In the years since, death has continued to shape her life personally. Her brother, mother, and father have all died, and those experiences have a profound impact on the way she approaches her work.

Becoming a mother deeply shaped Rebecca’s interest in understanding how children experience death, grief, and bereavement. Her work aligns with the belief that children benefit from honest, age appropriate conversations around dying and death, and from being included in the process rather than protected through silence or exclusion.

Rebecca’s work is grounded in honesty, companionship, and the belief that engaging more openly with death can help us live with greater presence, clarity, and care.

Rebecca has been working as a death doula since 2020 and has the following training:

  • End of Life Doula Professional Certificate program, University of Vermont
  • Foundation Training, Living Well Dying Well Person Centred Approach to Death and Dying program, UK
  • Children’s Grief and Bereavement Certificate Program, SickKids Centre for Community Mental Health led by Andrea Warnick, Canada
